Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has dismissed newest requires an upward analysis of the age prohibit for enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), describing them as “pointless.”

His suggestions adjust to renewed calls by Communications Minister, Sam Nartey George, for Ghana to review the enlistment age ceiling to allow residents as a lot as 35 years to hitch the military.

The proposal, shared in a Facebook submit, was supported by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi, who cited worldwide examples of higher enlistment ages.

Speaking in an interview on PleasureNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, October 8, Rev. Fordjour maintained that the prevailing age protection guiding military recruitment is trustworthy, internationally comparable, and rooted in professionalism.

He argued that the Ghana Armed Forces already operate inside a flexible and well-structured framework that accommodates quite a few courses of recruits, counting on their roles and expertise.

“…Whenever the Ghana Armed Forces is doing enlistment, that is for officers in some specialised packages, some specialised skills, like medical docs, they even recruit as a lot as 35 years, and so these calls are pointless,” he said.

“There’s already a protection set, and the Ghana Armed Forces is doing the right issue. I don’t see why a little bit of NDC MPs would want to make public requests that intervene with the usual work the Ghana Armed Forces is doing,” he added.

Rev. Fordjour cautioned in opposition to politicising military recruitment, citing Liberia’s earlier experience as a warning of the hazards of altering age insurance coverage insurance policies for political expediency.

“History tells us that when Liberia’s supervision on the time tampered with the age protection and made recruitment political — bringing in foot troopers above 35 — it ended up weakening the drive. We don’t have to get there,” he warned.

He urged politicians to allow the Chief of Defence Staff and his crew to carry out their duties with “absolute neutrality and professionalism,” stressing that the current protection is in step with worldwide biggest practices.

Rev. Fordjour moreover addressed the suggestion that elevating the age prohibit might help cope with unemployment, calling it misguided.

“In any case, Hon. Sam George is a Cabinet Minister. If he feels strongly that, in a country the place the median age is 21.5, one of many easiest methods to curb unemployment is to spice up the prohibit to 35 to satisfy social gathering foot troopers, he can counsel it to Cabinet. If the Cabinet agrees, it’d then be tabled for consideration by the Ghana Armed Forces Council,” he said.
